UB Softball Opens 2019 Season With Two Wins On Day One Of Spring Break Trip To Florida

Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2019 season in Florida on Thursday afternoon in fine style defeating Assumption College, 11-2 in five innings, and completing the sweep on the day with a 5-2 win over USciences.

Against Assumption, the Purple Knights' offense was at full throttle scoring four runs in the top of the second inning and seven more in the fourth.

In the second, UB got on the board first when junior Abbigail Blanchard (Pawcatuck, Conn.) drew a base loaded walk and junior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) cleared the based with a three-RBI triple.

Junior Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Illinois) went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the season opener and senior Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.), playing in her home state, had two hits and two runs batted in against the Greyhounds.

Graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Illinois) started and got the win in the pitching circle in game one, and sophomore hurler Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) did a fine job in relief working 1.2 inning of scoreless and hitless ball to close the game out.

In the win over USciences, Hillman again was outstanding in relief earning the victory in game two of the day.  Sophomore Samantha Ferreri (Hauppauge, N.Y.) had the big hit in Thursday's second game with a pinch hit two-RBI double.

On Friday, the UB softball team will continue its Spring Break Trip to the Sunshine State facing Notre Dame of Ohio and Mercyhurst.
