BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In a second straight win-or-go-home matchup at Knights Field, the University of Bridgeport's men's soccer team kept its postseason run alive in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, outlasting third-seeded Wilmington, 4-2, in penalty kicks to reach the CACC Championship game. The second-seeded Purple Knights will now face top-seeded Post in the conference final on Saturday afternoon in Waterbury.
Graduate student Josh Erdos and sophomore goalkeeper Viktor Mašek served as two of the many heroes for UB on Wednesday. Erdos buried the game-winning PK to cap a thrilling shootout, while Masek came up huge with two clutch stops to give the Purple Knights the victory.
In regulation, Bridgeport responded twice to adversity in a back-and-forth contest. After Wilmington converted a first-half penalty in the 11th minute, Soren Larue answered just seven minutes later off a setup from Enzo Beatrix to make it 1–1.
Joao Miranda then put the hosts ahead early in the second half, finishing a pass from Loik Poder in the 49th minute, before the Wildcats quickly equalized less than two minutes later.
Neither side could find a breakthrough through two overtime periods, with Masek recording eight total saves to keep Bridgeport level.
In the decisive shootout, Beatrix, Ewen Le Cozic, Lucas Mah, and Erdos all converted from the spot to secure the 4–2 win and send the Purple Knights through in dramatic fashion.
