BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Needing a win to clinch a CACC playoff berth, the University of Bridgeport's women's soccer team posted a 3-0 triumph over Dominican on Tuesday night at Knights Field. The decisive victory puts the Purple Knights as the No. 7 seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament which starts on Saturday.
Sophomore Luiza Macedo set the tone for the home squad courtesy of a goal in the sixth minute. The native of Brazil is now the Purple Knights' leader in points this season with 12.
Luiza followed up her fourth goal of the year with an assist to her twin sister Manuela Macedo who doubled the UB lead in the 57th minute.
Manuela has now scored twice over Bridgeport's last three contests, which are also her first three game appearances as a Purple Knight.
Junior Emely Zelayandia punctuated UB's scoring surge with her second goal of the season in the 85th minute. The Massachusetts native maneuvered nicely around a Dominican defender before launching a shot over the Chargers' keeper from about 25 yards out.
Bridgeport controlled play throughout, outshooting the Chargers 14-9 while limiting them to just two shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Marit Blom earned her second shutout with two saves over the full 90 minutes.
