WORCESTER, Mass. – Despite scoring the game's first goal just minutes into the second half, the University of Bridgeport's women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Assumption University on Saturday. The draw shifts the Purple Knights' record to 0-1-2 through three contests this season.
Sophomore Luiza Macedo notched UB's lone tally in the 47th minute off a terrific assist from junior Emely Zelayandia. Macedo now has five career goals while Zelayandia nabs her first assist at UB.
It was a nice delivery from Zelayandia that bounced once in the middle of the box before Macedo headed it into the back of the net. The Brazilian was the first on to the ball, out-maneuvering both Assumption's final defender and goalkeeper to give UB a 1-0 lead.
After Bridgeport's goal, and more than 34 minutes of scoreless action, the Greyhounds finally found their equalizer off a PK in the 81st minute.
Up until the penalty opportunity, the Purple Knights were kept in the game courtesy of an exceptional performance from goalkeeper Angelina Griva. The junior from Greece put together a career-high 12 saves, including 3-to-4 sprawling dives that kept the ball out of the back of the net.
Griva currently ranks fifth in the CACC in goals-against average (1.33) this season and second in total stops (23).
Assumption came into Saturday with a 2-0-1 record and were slotted No. 8 in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region rankings.
