Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team wrapped up a highly successful Spring Break trip to Florida on Friday with two more victories to raise their season record 12-2, as the Purple Knights opened the day with an 11-2 triumph over Ferris Sate in five innings and closed things out with a 9-8 win in eight innings over Slippery Rock University.
In the opening game of the day, junior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had three hits, and sophomore Samantha Ferreri (Hauppauge, N.Y.) smacked a three-run homer. Graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) earned the win in the pitching circle against the Bulldogs.
In Friday's nightcap, Bridgeport raced out to a 7-0 lead after two innings only to see Slippery Rock come back to take an 8-7 lead after the top of the seventh inning, but UB rallied to forced extra innings when senior Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit her second home run in as many days to tie things at 8-8 with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning.
The Purple Knights won the game in the bottom of the eighth when junior Abbigail Blanchard (Pawcatuck, Conn.), who had two hits and two runs batted in against the Rock, singled home pinch runner Reanna Lizardo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) from third base with one out.
Junior Samantha Sabor (Plainfield. Illinois) had a fine game at the plate in in Friday's second game going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Sophomore Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) earned her fourth win of 2019 against Slippery Rock working 5.1 innings in relief allowing only one run on two with four strikeouts and no walks.
Up next, the UB softball team is schedule to play a doubleheader at Adelphi University on Thursday afternoon.
