Women's Lacrosse Opens 2017 Schedule With 16-1 Home Win Over Nyack

Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team scored five goals in the first 4:19 of the game and raced out to a 13-0 halftime lead, as the Purple Knights cruised to a 16-1 win over the visiting Nyack College Warriors in the 2017 season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

Junior Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.) led the victorious Purple Knights with four goals on the day, and she also added one assist.

Senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.), making her debut for the UB women's lacrosse team, played a strong game scoring two goals and dishing out a team-high four assists.

Freshmen Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.) and Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) each has two goals to round out the Bridgeport multi-goal scorers on the afternoon.

The Purple Knights got single tallies from Lindsey Guadagni (Fr., Bayville, N.Y.), Lauren Mengel (Sr., Gilbertsville, Pa.), Ava Gambardella (Jr., West Haven, Conn.), Courtney Forry (Soph.,  Reinholds, Pa.), Kerry Mackinnon (Sr., Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Arianna Weingrad (Jr., Hicksville, N.Y.).

Freshman Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) played in goal for the first half for UB making two saves to earn the win on Friday, and classmate Rebecca Salinas (Saugerties, N.Y.) had one save in the final 30 minutes to wrap up the victory for her team.

Victoria Silvers had the lone Nyack goal in the contest.

The UB women's lacrosse team is back in action on Monday afternoon, when the Purple Knights open their 2017 road schedule at Southern Connecticut State University.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
