Women's Basketball Falls Short to Franklin Pierce, 50-47
Purple Knights will now finish regular season with 14 conference games.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Facing their final non-conference foe of the regular season, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team was defeated by Franklin Pierce on Thursday by a score of 50-47. The Purple Knights will now focus on CACC play in which they hold a 1-1 record so far in 2024-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a tight game throughout, the Purple Knights and Ravens each traded big runs in the first half. UB utilized a 14-0 stretch in the first quarter to take a 14-2 lead while FPU finished the half on a 15-0 run to lead by seven at the break.
Franklin Pierce would go on to stretch their advantage to 39-29 heading into the fourth quarter before UB made one final push. The Purple Knights strung together an 18-4 run to take a 47-43 edge with 3:38 remaining.
Ana Gascon's fast-break bucket, which gave Bridgeport the four-point lead, served as UB's final points of the game. FPU would score the final seven points of regulation.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Zahkiyyah Frazier (12 points) and Ciera Cevallos (10 points) led Bridgeport's offense with a pair of double-figure efforts. The duo combined for 22 points and nine of the Purple Knights' 17 made field goals.
Frazier also added seven rebounds while Gascon nabbed a season-high and game-high 15 boards. Gascon, who now has three games with 13-plus rebounds, also served as UB's third-leading scorer with nine points.
Niyah Whitten rounded out UB's major offensive contributors with eight points in the contest.
Collectively speaking, Bridgeport's attack finished 17-for-50 from the field, 5-of-19 from three and 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Defensively, the Purple Knights finished with 10 steals which marks their fifth game this year with double-digit takeaways.
Franklin Pierce's starters totaled all 50 of their points while Sade Young knocked in a three-pointer for UB's lone bench points of the game.
Bridgeport, meanwhile, also earned advantages in both points off turnovers (23-12) and second-chance points (19-10). UB nabbed 12 offensive boards in the contest.
