UB's Amani Melendez Named CACC Women's Basketball Rookie Of The Week To Open The 2022-23 Season
Averaged 20.0 Points And 4.0 Rebounds Plus Shot 52.0 From The Field In Her First Two College Outings
New Haven, Conn.-University of Bridgeport women's basketball freshman standout Amani Melendez (Woodbridge, Va.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's Rookie of the Week for her outstanding play in a pair a games that opened the 2022-23 season for the Purple Knights over the weekend at the College of Staten Island Classic.
Melendez averaged 20.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in win over Franklin Pierce and Staten Island to give Bridgeport its first 2-0 start to a season since the 2013-14 campaign.
In the two victories, Amani shot the ball extremely well hitting 52.0 percent (13-of-25) of her field goals, including going 9-of-15 (60.0%) from behind the three-point arc.
She also chipped in six steals and four assists in the two games.
In Saturday's season-opening win over Franklin Pierce, Melendez starred in her collegiate debut leading all scores in the game with 25 points, as she went 9-of-15 from the floor, including hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the winners.
She wrapped up the weekend with a team-best 15 points in a one-point victory of Sateen Island on Sunday.
From the UB men's basketball team, graduate student Matt Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) earned a spot on this week's CACC Honor Roll, as he averaged 20.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and shot 60.9 percent from the floor in two wins for the Purple Knights.
