Softball Sweeps Chestnut Hill on Senior Day
Purple Knights (24-16, 9-3 CACC) walk off in the opener, tally 6-2 triumph in the finale.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Celebrating Senior Day in impressive fashion, the University of Bridgeport's softball team secured a doubleheader sweep of Chestnut Hill College on Saturday at Seaside Park. The pair of victories lifts the Purple Knights to 24-16 overall on the season, including a 9-3 record in CACC play.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 4, Chestnut Hill 3
In fitting fashion on Senior Day, Mya Jones delivered the decisive moment for the Purple Knights, lifting the Purple Knights to a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory over Chestnut Hill.
With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Breanna Pelaez ignited the rally with a leadoff single before swiping second, setting the stage for Jones, who knocked an RBI single to right to bring home the winning run.
UB showed resilience throughout after falling behind 2-0 early, responding with a three-run third inning to seize a 3-2 advantage.
McKenzie Morgan highlighted the frame with a two-run double, and Lacie Grenier followed with an RBI single to complete the rally. The Griffins would eventually even the score at 3-3, but the Purple Knights had the final answer late.
Offensively, Pelaez, Jones, and Morgan each paced UB with two hits apiece, helping the team total seven hits.
In the circle, senior Vise Zarate turned in a strong Senior Day performance, tossing a complete game while allowing just three runs on six hits to secure her conference-leading 12th victory of the season.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 6, Chestnut Hill 2
The Purple Knights completed a Senior Day sweep in dominant fashion, riding a sensational performance from Jones to a 6-2 victory over Chestnut Hill in the finale.
Fresh off her walk-off heroics in the opener, Jones was unstoppable at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs to power the Purple Knights' offense.
Jones wasted no time setting the tone, delivering an RBI double in the first inning to spark a two-run frame before later adding a run-scoring single in the fourth.
She then capped off her remarkable day with a solo home run in the sixth, putting an exclamation point on the win.
UB's offense was firing on all cylinders throughout, piling up 13 hits and scoring in four different innings.
The Purple Knights received contributions up and down the lineup, as Pelaez, Morgan, and Paityn Thibodeaux each added RBI hits in the victory.
Pelaez and Thibodeaux both finished with multi-hit efforts, helping UB maintain constant pressure offensively.
In the circle, Samantha Ledger turned in another outstanding outing, tossing a complete game while allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out five to earn her 11th win of the season.
