PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – In a rematch of last year's CACC Tournament matchup, the University of Bridgeport's softball team swept a doubleheader at Jefferson on Saturday. The Purple Knights' 2-0 afternoon puts their overall record at 21-15 this season, including a 6-2 mark in conference play.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 3, Jefferson 2 (Eight Innings)
It was a dramatic opener that fueled the UB sweep.
Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth, the Purple Knights chipped away before tying the game with two outs in the seventh, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
Bridgeport first got on the board in the sixth inning when Mya Jones delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Sydnee Perreault, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Purple Knights then evened the score in the seventh, capitalizing on a Jefferson error to plate the tying run with two outs.
In the eighth, Genna D'Amato sparked the rally by leading off with a single before eventually coming around to score the game-winning run on a clutch sacrifice fly from McKenzie Morgan.
Jones also contributed offensively with a first-inning double, accounting for Bridgeport's lone extra-base hit among its six total hits in the contest.
In the circle, Vise Zarate turned in a gritty complete-game effort, tossing all eight innings while allowing just two runs on eight hits and striking out four.
With the win, Zarate grabbed her CACC-best 11th victory of the season.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 11, Jefferson 3 (Five Innings)
Riding the momentum from the thrilling win in the opener, the Purple Knights dominated the finale.
UB jumped out early and never looked back, building a 5-0 lead through the first two innings before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth.
Perreault delivered a historic performance to lead the offensive outburst, blasting three home runs and driving in seven runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Her monster game included a two-run shot in the second and a grand slam in the fifth. With the performance, Perreault is now tied atop the CACC with eight home runs this season. She is also ranked sixth in slugging.
Jones also went deep for the Purple Knights, launching a solo home run in the first inning to help set the tone early.
Sophia Philippou turned in a perfect game two at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk, while also driving in a run as part of UB's 11-hit attack.
