BRIDGEPORT, Conn. Softball Claims Dramatic Finale, Splits with Franklin Pierce – Playing the top team in the east region so far this season, the University of Bridgeport's softball team split a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce (14-2) on Tuesday afternoon. The 1-1 day puts the Purple Knights' record at 14-10 on the year (1-1, CACC).
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 6, Franklin Pierce 5 (Five innings due to darkness)
Powered by a dramatic late swing, the Purple Knights earned a 6-5 win in the finale that was cut short in the fifth inning due to darkness.
UB jumped out early, piling up five runs in the second inning to quickly erase a 2-0 deficit. RBI contributions from Sydnee Perreault, Mya Jones and Paityn Thibodeaux highlighted the rally, with Thibodeaux delivering a two-run double to give UB a 5-2 lead.
Franklin Pierce answered in the fifth, registering a trio of unearned runs to even the score at 5-5 and set the stage for late-game heroics.
That's when freshman Kayla Fullalove-Silveira delivered the defining moment. Entering the game earlier in the inning, she stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and launched her first career hit—a solo home run to center field—breaking the tie and ultimately standing as the game-winning swing as play was halted just two batters later due to darkness.
Offensively, UB totaled eight hits in the win, with Jones and Genna D'Amato each recording two-hit performances, while Thibodeaux drove in a team-high two runs.
UB right-hander Samantha Ledger earned the win in the circle, tossing all five innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
GAME ONE – Franklin Pierce 13, Bridgeport 3
Perreault served as one of the few bright spots for UB in the first game of the afternoon. The junior outfielder went a perfect 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a triple.
Perreault tallied two of the Purple Knights' three runs while Isabella Benjamin scored UB's final tally on a McKenzie Morgan sac fly in the fifth.
D'Amato also added a hit as she finished the day 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored.
