WORCESTER, Mass. – Continuing a stretch of three doubleheaders in four days, the University of Bridgeport's softball team (12-8) split a pair of non-conference contests at Assumption on Thursday.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 1, Assumption 0
Senior Vise Zarate led the way in the opener with one of the best outings of her career.
The right-hander was sensational from start to finish, tossing a complete-game shutout while scattering just five hits across seven innings.
Zarate did not issue a walk and struck out three in her eighth win of the season.
Offensively, UB manufactured its lone run of the contest in the fourth inning. Mya Jones sparked the rally with a single and later came around to score on a perfectly executed double steal, swiping home to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 edge.
Jones led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance and the game's only run, while McKenzie Morgan and Paityn Thibodeaux each added hits as part of a five-hit attack.
Lacie Grenier also chipped in with a pinch-hit single late in the game.
GAME TWO – Assumption 14, Bridgeport 0 (Five Innings)
The Purple Knights finished with four hits in the second contest, with four different players accounting for those knocks. Jones, Thibodeaux, Isabella Benjamin and Sienna Lucas each recorded a hit to pace the UB offense.
Despite putting multiple runners aboard in the early innings, Bridgeport was unable to break through offensively in the setback.
