BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Highlighted by a season-best run total and a pair of dominant pitching performances, the University of Bridgeport's softball team earned a doubleheader sweep against AIC on Saturday afternoon at Seaside Park. The Purple Knights' wins of 11-0 and 4-1 push their record to 11-5 this season.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 11, AIC 0 (Five Innings)
The Purple Knights produced a season-high run total in the opener, pounding out 11 hits while eight different players recorded at least one hit in the contest.
Paityn Thibodeaux led the charge with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, driving in three runs while launching the first of two two-run home runs she would hit on the day.
Breanna Pelaez and Isabella Benjamin also turned in multi-hit efforts, with Pelaez going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Benjamin adding two hits of her own.
Additional run production came from Sydnee Perreault and Sophia Philippou, who each drove in two runs during Bridgeport's big afternoon at the plate.
In the circle, Vise Zarate was dominant once again, tossing a five-inning shutout while allowing just three hits, striking out four, and issuing no walks to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Bridgeport broke the game open early with a five-run second inning and continued to pile on runs across the next two frames to secure the run-rule victory.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 4, AIC 1
UB starting pitcher Samantha Ledger was outstanding once again in the finale, tossing a complete-game two-hitter while allowing just one run across seven innings.
The right-hander struck out two and worked around four walks to improve to 4-0 on the season, continuing her impressive early campaign.
UB opened the scoring in the third inning when Perreault delivered an RBI double to bring home Maerin Lyon.
The Purple Knights then broke the game open in the fourth as Thibodeaux launched her second two-run home run of the day, giving UB a 3-0 advantage before Pelaez followed with an RBI triple later in the frame.
Lyon finished with two hits and two runs scored in the victory, while Pelaez chipped in an RBI as well.
The contest also featured memorable moments for a pair of Purple Knights, as Lyon and Grace DuBrava both recorded the first hits of their collegiate careers during the win.
AIC managed its lone run in the seventh inning, but Ledger quickly closed the door to secure the win.
