MELBOURNE, Fla. – On the penultimate day of their spring break trip to Florida, the University of Bridgeport's softball team split a pair of games on Friday at the USSSA Space Coast Complex. The Purple Knights, now 8-4 this season, rebounded from a loss to Findlay (17-4) in the opener with a 3-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the finale.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 3, West Virginia Wesleyan 0
The Purple Knights rebounded nicely in the second game of the day to earn their eighth win of the season.
Junior right-hander Samantha Ledger continued her sensational start to the season, tossing a complete-game shutout. The Rhode Island native allowed just three hits and one walk across seven innings while striking out three to improve to 3-0 on the year with a 1.35 ERA (31 IP).
The Purple Knights opened the scoring in the second inning, plating two runs after Isabella Benjamin and Maerin Lyon drew back-to-back walks to begin the frame. Breanna Pelaez then reached on a West Virginia Wesleyan error that allowed both runners to score and gave UB an early 2-0 advantage.
Bridgeport added an insurance run in the fifth when Paityn Thibodeaux delivered an RBI single that scored Nathalie Mongrain. Thibodeaux led the Purple Knights offensively with a pair of hits, while UB finished with three runs on three hits.
GAME ONE – Findlay 17, Bridgeport 4
Bridgeport struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning as Genna D'Amato delivered an RBI single before later scoring in the frame to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead.
Findlay responded with a decisive eight-run fourth inning and added insurance over the final three frames to pull away for the victory.
The Purple Knights finished with 12 hits offensively, led by two-hit performances from D'Amato, McKenzie Morgan and Benjamin.
Morgan and Mya Jones each drove in a run as UB plated two more runs in the fifth, but Findlay's 18-hit attack proved too much to overcome.
