MELBOURNE, Fla. – Hitting the mid-way point of their spring break trip to Florida, the University of Bridgeport's softball team split a pair of contests on Tuesday at the USSSA Space Coast Complex. The Purple Knights earned a 5-3 win over SNHU in the opener before falling 4-0 to Charleston (WV) in the finale.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 5, SNHU 3
UB didn't waste any time in the first game of the day, striking first in the opening frame.
Sydnee Perreault sparked things for the Purple Knights with a lead-off double to center and later scored on a passed ball to give UB an early 1-0 advantage.
SNHU answered with a run in the bottom half but UB quickly regained the lead in the second as Breanna Pelaez ripped an RBI triple to left to score Sienna Lucas.
The Purple Knights broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating three runs to extend the lead to 5-1. With the bases loaded, Mya Jones drew an RBI walk before McKenzie Morgan followed with a two-run double to left field that brought home Genna D'Amato and Perreault.
SNHU threatened in the sixth inning, scoring twice to trim the deficit to 5-3, but Bridgeport starter Vise Zarate settled in to close out the game.
Zarate earned the complete-game victory, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five over seven innings of work. She is now 4-1 in the circle this season.
Pelaez led the Purple Knights offensively with two hits, including a triple and an RBI, while Morgan finished with a pair of RBIs. Perreault also contributed a double and scored twice.
GAME TWO – Charleston (WV) 4, Bridgeport 0
The Purple Knights were only able to come up with two hits in the finale.
Singles from Lucas and Sophia Philippou along with walks from D'Amato and Paityn Thibodeaux served as UB's lone offense.
Sophomore Tanya Sanchez tossed a solid outing in her first start of the season. The right-hander allowed just three earned runs in six innings of work.
