BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Wrapping up their CACC slate with a pair of games against Jefferson, the University of Bridgeport's softball team split a doubleheader with the Rams on Tuesday at Seaside Park.
The Purple Knights' 7-0 victory in game one clinched UB's first regular-season championship as part of the CACC. UB currently sits with a 30-12 overall record, including a conference mark of 19-3.
Bridgeport's last regular-season conference championship came as part of the ECC in 2021.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 7, Jefferson 0
Another fantastic performance from Kaite Burawski catapulted UB in the opener. The left-hander tossed a one-hit shutout, facing 22 total batters in the process. She allowed just one single and zero walks.
Burawski's seven shutout innings lowered her ERA to 1.77 (2nd in the CACC) this season across 130.2 innings pitched (2nd in the CACC). She leads the conference in several pitching categories, including strikeouts (155), wins (16) and batting average against (.188).
On the attack, UB set the tone with six runs in the first two innings. Angela Oros plated a pair with a single in the first while Madison D'Amato, Emily Chase and Mya Jones all knocked RBI singles in the second.
Oros, who reached base three times, added a sac fly in the sixth to finish the game with a team-high three RBIs.
Sydnee Perreault, meanwhile, logged UB's lone extra-base hit courtesy of a double in the sixth.
GAME TWO – Jefferson 1, Bridgeport 0
The Purple Knights were unable to replicate their offensive success in the finale. UB mustered just three hits and didn't initiate a single walk for just the second time all season.
Freshman Lacie Grenier tallied two of Bridgeport's three hits with singles while Oros doubled in the seventh and was left at second base to end the game.
Oros finished the doubleheader a team-best 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a walk.
UB's starting pitcher Vise Zarate earned the hard-luck loss in the circle. The junior allowed just one run on six hits in a complete-game performance. She has now yielded just one tally across her last 14 innings of work.
Jefferson scored its only run in the fourth inning off two singles, a stolen base and a sac bunt.
