MELBOURNE, Fla. – Sparked by sensational pitching, the University of Bridgeport's softball team earned a pair of wins on Sunday night. The Purple Knights posted triumphs over both Wheeling University (3-1) and Walsh University (8-0) at the Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Fla.
Game One – Bridgeport 3, Wheeling 1
It was a memorable opener for UB as it served as win No. 300 in the career of head coach Dawn Stearns. Stearns, currently in her 16th year at Bridgeport, has been the Purple Knights' winningest coach since 2022.
Pitching piloted Bridgeport to the historic triumph as Tanya Sanchez and Kaite Burawski combined for a two-hitter against the Cardinals.
Burawski picked up win No. 61 in her illustrious career thanks to 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. She finished with six strikeouts and now stands with a 1.48 ERA across 23.2 innings this season
Offensively, Mya Jones supplied three of UB's four total hits in the contest. She singled in Bridgeport's first run of the game which scored Madison D'Amato.
D'Amato, meanwhile, reached base three times, including a bunt single in the fifth inning that ultimately scored Bridgeport's final two runs.
Game Two – Bridgeport 8, Walsh 0 (Five Inn.)
Burawski one-upped her opening victory with an absolute gem in the finale. The left-hander recorded her fifth career no-hitter while striking out 11 batters across five innings.
Burawski's dominance featured just one base runner allowed and a string of seven consecutive strikeouts at one point. She yielded just one hit in 8.2 innings of action on Sunday.
UB's offense, meanwhile, posted runs in all five innings and plated multiple runs in three of those frames. D'Amato was once again at the forefront with a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of runs scored. She also walked once.
Angela Oros, McKenzie Morgan and Lacie Grenier all joined in with two hits of their own. Oros tallied a pair of RBIs as well while Grenier notched her first career triple.
Sydnee Perreault and Paityn Thibodeaux also added singles as part of Bridgeport's 10 total hits.
