Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a home East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Dowling College Golden Lions on a wind-swept Saturday afternoon in Seaside Park, rallying to take game one, 12-11, and falling in game two 11-1, in five innings. The Purple Knights are now 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the ECC. Dowling is now 12-12-1 overall and 4-5 in conference action.
In the opener, UB trailed 11-5 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Purple Knights scored five runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh, capped off by a walk-off single by senior Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.). Blair had three runs batted in game one.
Blair's game-winning hit gave classmate Taylor Hendrickson (Binghamton, N.Y.) the win in relief.
Senior Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) has three hits in the opener, and Katelyn Wall (Sr., Madison, Conn.), junior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) and Ashley Hessler (Soph., Pawtucket, R.I.), each had two hits for the game one winners.
Sophomore Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) also had three RBIs in game one.
In game two, Katelyn Wall drove in UB's lone run in the fifth inning.
The UB softball team is back in action on Monday when they host Queens (N.Y.) College in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. Game one is the completion of a game suspended last Tuesday by rain in the bottom of the fourth inning.
