Five Second Half Goals Lift Bridgeport Men's Soccer To Home Win Over Southern Connecticut State

Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team picked up its fourth straight victory and sixth win in the team's last seven matches with a 5-1 non-conference triumph over the visiting Southern Connecticut State University Owl at a soggy Knights Field on Wednesday afternoon.  UB is now 7-4-0 overall, and SCSU slips to 2-5-4 on the season.  All of the scoring in the match came in the final 45 minutes of action after a scoreless first half.

Bridgeport opened the scoring on Wednesday just 2:21 into the second half when senior Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) tucked home his fourth goal of 2019 off an assist from classmate Leandro Avila (Panama City, Panama).

After the Owls tie the match at 1-1 just under four minutes later when Ben Pierce scored off a deflection from a Bridgeport defender, Avila would score the game-winning goal off a lovely assist from graduate student Goncalo Mendes (Vila do Conde, Portugal).  Leandro leads the Purple Knights with six goals so far in 2019.

Avila's goal would open the floodgates for his team, as Bridgeport would find the back of the SCSU net three more time in the next 11 minutes.

Shortly after assisting on the game-winning tally, Mendes would score goal number four of the season off and assist from Vadseth.

Senior Yoel Salvador (Bridgeport, Conn.) and sophomore Jesse Clark (Stratford, Conn.) would each score in the 75th minute of play to make the final score 5-1 in favor of the Purple Knights, who have scored 17 goals during their four-match winning streak.

Sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) earned the win between the pipes for Bridgeport making two saves in nearly 80 minutes of action, and freshman Felipe Dias (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished the match with two stops in the final 10:05 of play.

Up next, the UB men's soccer team returns to East Coast Conference play on Saturday, as the Purple Knights travel to New York City to take on Queens (N.Y.) College in a key contest.  Action is slated to get underway in Flushing at 3:00 p.m.
