Men's Basketball Sees Season Come To A Tough End With A 90-86 Overtime Loss To Molloy In ECC Final

Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team saw its season come to a tough close in the 2019 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament Final in UB's Hubbell Gym, as the Molloy College Lions took their only lead of the game in the overtime period, as the third-seeded Lions railed to defeat the fourth-seeded Purple Knights, 90-86.  Bridgeport sees its season end with an 18-13 record, and Molloy moves on the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship Tournament with a 21-9 mark.

The Purple Knights raced out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game and held a 47-34 advantage at halftime.  UB increased that lead to 17 points with 18:55 to play in regulation, only to see the Lions tie the contest at 79-79 with just under one second to play in regulation when Mike Torre put home an offensive rebound.

Molloy outscored Bridgeport, 11-7 in the extra period to come away with Sunday's victory.

Senior Dennis Green (Bronx, N.Y.) led Bridgeport with 19 points in the loss. 

Green was joined in double figures by sophomore Hashem Abbas (Nablus, Palestine) with 15 points, senior Vakas Iqbal (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 14 points and nine rebounds, plus senior Eric Rankin (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Jayden Iturmendi (York, Pa.), each netted 11 points.

Green and Rankin were named to the 2019 All-ECC Tournament Team for their fine play over the span of Bridgeport's three ECC Championship contest.

Curtis Jenkins led Molloy on Sunday with an impressive double-double a game-high 28 points and a game-leading 16 rebounds.

Tournament Most Outstanding Player Nick Corbett also played a big part in the Lions' victory scoring 25 points.
