Baseball Tallies Thrilling Win at Post in Regular Season Finale
Purple Knights surge into the CACC Tournament as winners of 10 of their last 12.
WATERBURY, Conn. – In their final tune-up prior to starting the CACC Tournament on Friday, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team registered a thrilling 7-3 win at Post on Tuesday afternoon. UB ends the regular season with an overall record of 21-23, including 17-16 in the CACC. The Purple Knights also head into the postseason with a 10-2 record over their last 12 games.
Trailing 2-1 entering the ninth, the Purple Knights erupted for six runs to flip the game on its head and secure the win.
Anthony Matturro ignited the rally with a leadoff single and later crossed home with the tying run before delivering the knockout blow later in the inning.
Anthony Armenia provided the first big swing with a two-run double down the left field line to give Bridgeport a 3-2 advantage, and the offense kept rolling from there.
Matturro capped the outburst with a two-run double of his own, while UB also plated runs via bases-loaded walks to break the game open.
Vincenzo Della Porta and Matturro paced the offense with two hits apiece as part of a nine-hit effort, while Liam O'Neal added a triple—his team-leading fifth of the season, tied for the most in the CACC.
On the mound, six Purple Knight pitchers combined for a strong performance to keep the game within reach until the late surge.
Jonathan Siwiecki was particularly effective out of the bullpen, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.
Christian Walsh earned the win with a clean eighth inning, improving to 4-0 over his last four outings, before Alex Springer closed out the victory.
