BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Continuing a stretch of seven conference games across an eight-day span, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team split a doubleheader against Dominican on Wednesday at Seaside Park. UB walked off for a 2-1 win in the finale after dropping a 4-3 opener.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 2, Dominican 1 (8 Innings)
UB capped off the doubleheader in thrilling fashion, walking off for a 2-1 victory.
Locked in a 1-1 tie heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Purple Knights delivered the decisive blow as Anthony Matturro ripped a one-out triple before Ryan Baldwin followed with a walk-off RBI single to seal the win.
Matturro played a pivotal role throughout, accounting for both UB runs after earlier delivering an RBI double in the third inning to open the scoring.
Overall, Bridgeport's offense produced seven hits, with Tyler Pennisi collecting a pair while Baldwin and Luke Meister also contributed base knocks.
On the mound, Alex Bulger turned in a stellar start in a no-decision, tossing seven strong innings while allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Christian Walsh then shut the door out of the bullpen, firing a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win.
GAME ONE – Dominican 4, Bridgeport 3
The Purple Knights carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning, but a four-run frame by the visitors proved to be the difference.
UB had grabbed the lead in the seventh as Meister and Connor Lesczczynski each knocked one-out singles before Meister was able to score on a Dominican error.
James Ackerman was outstanding on the mound, working into the ninth inning while allowing just one run through the first eight frames before running into trouble late.
Offensively, the Purple Knights totaled 10 hits, with Meister, Pennisi and Lesczczynski each recording two-hit performances. Pennisi and Patrick Krempasky also drove in runs as part of a late rally attempt.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, UB mounted a comeback by scoring twice and putting the tying run just 90 feet away. The game would end, however, with the potential equalizer stranded at third base.
