Baseball Splits Doubleheader With AIC in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Opening a six-game spring break swing through the Carolinas, the University of Bridgeport baseball team earned a split against AIC on Saturday at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. After dropping the opener by a 7-0 score, the Purple Knights bounced back with a 2-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 2, AIC 0
A dominant pitching performance from Alex Bulger propelled the Purple Knights in the finale.
The sophomore was outstanding from start to finish, tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout to improve to 1-0 on the season. The right-hander scattered just four hits over seven innings, walked two and struck out a pair while facing 29 batters in a composed and efficient outing.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Purple Knights broke through. Anthony Matturro sparked the rally with a single to left before swiping second. Two batters later, Anthony Armenia delivered the big hit, lacing an RBI double to left to plate Matturro and give Bridgeport a 1-0 advantage.
UB added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Ryan Baldwin led off with a double to center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Raymond Morales then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Baldwin home to extend the lead to 2-0.
That was more than enough support for Bulger, who worked out of traffic in the later innings to preserve the shutout.
Bridgeport finished with five hits in the contest, with Matturro, Armenia, Baldwin, Andrew Sinclair and Tyler Pennisi each recording a knock.
GAME ONE – AIC 7, Bridgeport 0
UB recorded seven hits in the opener, with seven different players accounting for those knocks in a balanced offensive effort.
Conor Lesczczynski delivered the lone extra-base hit of the game, ripping a double in the third inning.
Morales reached base a team-best three times courtesy of a single and a pair of walks.
