PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Facing the 22nd-ranked team in the country on the road, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team dropped a pair of games at Jefferson on Wednesday.
GAME ONE – Jefferson 4, Bridgeport 2
The Purple Knights had their chances in a tightly contested opener. UB left 10 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings.
Bridgeport's offense was supplied by RBI singles from Anthony Matturro in the third and from Jeremy Rodrigues in the seventh. Rodrigues also scored on Matturro's base knock after earning a walk and stealing second.
Nico Salmeri provided UB's lone extra-base hit in the game with a double in the fourth inning. He also walked for the 11th time this season.
On the mound, Vincenzo Bruno put forth one of his best-ever outings. The Italian right-hander went four scoreless for the Purple Knights out of the bullpen. He allowed just two hits and struck out four.
GAME TWO - Jefferson 19, Bridgeport 8
With UB leading 7-3 after two and half innings, Jefferson scored 16 runs in a three-inning span to seize control of the finale.
Salmeri followed up his standout opener with a pair of RBI singles in the second game of the day.
Tyler Pennisi, meanwhile, went a team-best 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Liam O'Neal and Vin Mallon joined in with RBI hits as well.
O'Neal hammered a solo home run—his sixth long ball of the season—in the first inning while Mallon plated Matturro with a single in the second.
O'Neal and Mallon are now tied for second on the team this season with six home runs apiece. Rodrigues leads the Purple Knights with eight.
UP NEXT
Bridgeport will play a four-game series this weekend at Seaside Park against Bloomfield College. UB will celebrate Senior Day prior to a noon Sunday doubleheader.
