BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Wrapping up a stretch of six conference games over 72 hours, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team split a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 4, Chestnut Hill 3
The Purple Knights earned a dramatic win in the opener courtesy of a walk-off single by junior Anthony Matturro. UB also plated the tying run in the ninth as they were down 3-2 with just two outs remaining.
Liam O'Neal started the rally in the final frame with a one-out double before scoring the tying run on a Marcos Dominguez single. Dominguez then crossed home plate to win the game on the Matturro base knock.
Bridgeport also led 2-0 in the first game thanks to RBI doubles from Anthony Armenia and Tyler Pennisi in the second inning.
Collectively, it was an extremely balanced offense for the Purple Knights as their 10 total hits were recorded by nine different players.
On the pitching front, Dominick Weidtman picked up his first career win. The sophomore kept UB within striking distance with four scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Weidtman scattered just three hits while striking out four CHC batters.
GAME TWO – Chestnut Hill 7, Bridgeport 5 (Seven-Inning Game)
It was another dramatic finish in the finale, but this time, it went the way of Chestnut Hill. Down to their final out, the Griffins scored the tying run in the seventh and then a pair of go-ahead tallies.
After piling up 10 hits in the first game, the Purple Knights added 13 more in game two.
Pennisi, Dominguez and Jeremy Rodrigues all went 3-for-4 in the finale with Pennisi hammering a second RBI double of the day.
Rodrigues continues his standout senior campaign which features team highs in batting average (.359), RBIs (29), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.620).
