Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference road doubleheader against the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Monday afternoon, as UB held on for a 7-6 victory in the opener and dropped the nightcap, 11-4. Bridgeport is now 14-24 overall and an even 10-10 in the ECC. QC moves its overall record to 22-15-1, and its conference mark to 11-9.
In game one, the Purple Knights raced out to a 5-0 and survived a five run rally from the hosts to hold on for the 7-6 victory.
Sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) had two runs batted in for the winners in the opener, as UB banged out 13 hits as a team.
Senior Christopher Martucci (Ridgefield, N.J.) earned his second win of the year in game one working seven inning in which he allowed only one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Junior Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) earned his second save of the year in the opener.
In game two, freshman Joey Grillo (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had two hits, as he did in the opener, along with a run batted in, and classmate Cory Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) also knocked in a run for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the UB baseball team is scheduled to open a four-game weekend East Coast Conference series against Molloy College with a single game in Seaside Park at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
