Purple Knights Earn Key 9-8 ECC Women's Lacrosse Road Win Over St. Thomas Aquinas

Sparkill, N.Y.-A goal by senior Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.), her second of the day with 3:04 to play after scoring the first goal of the afternoon just 48 seconds into action, proved to be the game-winner, as the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team posted a key 9-8 East Coast Conference road win over the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Saturday afternoon.  The win keeps the Purple Knights in the running for a spot in this season's ECC Postseason Championship Tournament, as UB is now 9-4 overall and an even 3-3 in conference play.  STAC is now 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.

Saturday's contest was a see-saw affair that saw Bridgeport score the first three goals of the game, only to have the Spartans answer with three straight scores to tie things at 3-3.  After the Purple Knights took a 4-3 lead, STAC scored the final three tallies of the first half to take a 6-4 halftime lead.

UB would then score the first two goals of the second half to tie the game at 6-6, and after the Spartans took a 7-6 lead, Bridgeport freshman Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.) tied the game at 7-7 with her only goal of the day with 12:27 to play.

Freshman Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) gave the Purple Knights an 8-7 lead with 10:47 to play, when she netted her team-high, fourth goal of the afternoon.

STAC would come right back to tie things up at 8-8 just 50 seconds later, and that would be all the scoring in the tilt until Mengel's game-winner.

Sophomore Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.) rounded out the Bridgeport goal scorers on the afternoon with two for the winners.

Freshman goalkeeper Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) made six key saves to pick up the win for UB.

Free positions shots played a key role in the victory for Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights converted 5-of-8 attempts; while STAC went 0-for-5.

Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will close out its 2017 home schedule with a key ECC game versus Mercy College on Tuesday evening at Knights Field.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
