Purple Knights Wrap Up Busy Weekend With Sweep Of Mercy College

Bridgeport, CT-The UB baseball team completed a busy weekend of playing four games in two days with an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of the Mercy College Mavericks on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights took game one, 5-1, and won game two, 5-3. With the sweep, Bridgeport is now 4-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Mercy falls to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.

In the opener, the Purple Knights never trailed scoring single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before adding two additional tallies in the eighth.

Junior catcher Mike DeLellis (Marlton, NJ) drove in two runs for UB in game one, and senior Kevin Clements (Vernon, CT) and sophomore Ryan Barba (Stratford, CT) had three hits apiece to lead an 11-hit Bridgeport attack.

Sophomore Matt Bartolomei (Bridgeport, CT) picked up the win in the opener for the Purple Knights throwing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in which he struck out four and allowed only four hits. Bartolomei is now 2-0 on the year with an 0.77 earned run average.

Mercy starter Matt Walsh (0-1) took the loss for the Mavericks in game one.

Junior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, CT) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in game two to help UB to a 5-3 comeback win. Barrows drove in three runs in the sixth inning with a base loaded triple to give Bridgeport a 4-2 lead which they never relinquished. After Mercy had cut the Purple Knights lead to 4-3, Barrows blasted his second home run of the year over the left field wall in the eighth inning to give his team an insurance run and to make the score 5-3, which would prove to be the final in game two.

Bridgeport starter Anthony Plomitallo (JR, New Hyde Park, NY) pitched 6.1 innings to earn his first win of the season, as he is now 1-1. Senior Nick Galioto (N. Babylon, NY) picked up his second save in two days in game two on Sunday working two scoreless innings.

Starter Steve Merslich (1-3) was the loser for Mercy in game two.

The Purple Knights are next scheduled to be in action on Tuesday night at Molloy College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
